UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger

Posted on November 25, 2010

Some of you may already have been informed of the following decision made by UNESCO; however, I thought people would like to see the letter recently received by them regards Manx Gaelic. Cheers to everyone who wrote in support.

As a result of the large number of comments on the successful language revitalization efforts, UNESCO is pleased to acknowledge that the term ‘extinct’ does not reflect the current  situation for Manx. This language is now classified as ‘critically endangered’ and identified as being in process of revitalization.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in the Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger. Your participation is very important to us.

Kind regards,

Editorial team,
